Problems All Stylists Face. Problems Solved By Ring My Stylist App.

Problems All Stylists Face

Being an Independent Stylist can be a dream come true, but there are several problems that commonly occur. We recently held a focus group in Las Vegas, NV to talk about these issues and how the ‘Ring My Stylist’ app can solve them for you.

1. No shows
It is 9:15 on a Saturday morning, you are in the salon prepped and ready to go. Your first client was due in at 9. Your phone flashes with a text

“I forgot about the appointment, sorry! :(”
which is then followed up by an “I won’t be able to make it” or even worse “I can be there in about 2 hours.”

Sound familiar? There is nothing worse than a last-minute cancellation or a no-show. Not only is it highly irritating but you also lose out on money, especially if you turned down a potential client for the spot.

Of course, sometimes things happen which can’t be avoided but to reduce the number of ‘forgotten’ appointments we have several layers of security!

To book an appointment, we have a confirmation button and message. The client will click a ‘Confirm’ button or will reply to the text message with “Yes.” Both actions will trigger a confirmation time stamp showing the date, hour, minute and sec both parties agreed to. This timestamp will be visible to you and them.

Firstly, during scheduling, the client has options to set reminders for 1, 3, 5 or 10 days before the appointment. Those reminders mean notifications on their mobile device via the app. Then, we send a confirmation email to the client, in case they don’t “notice” the mobile notifications and just to be 100% sure they won’t forget the appointment, we send SMS messages with the details of the appointments.
As you can see… it is kind of impossible for a client to say “I forgot!”

2. Indecisive clients
Raise your hand if you have ever had a client walk in for a service or consultation and say “I don’t know what I want…”

Consultations are a very valuable service, a proper consultation separates the “Professional” from the rest. “Ring My Stylist” has added a “pre-consult” feature so you can now do a “pre-consult” and not need to be face to face.

The ‘Ring My Stylist’ app allows your clients to upload pictures under the Visits tab, with hairstyles and color examples that they like. This lets you suggest the perfect style and frees up your calendar for other clients.

3. Booking the wrong service
Timing is everything! While upgrades such as a treatment, cut or color are great for your bottom line, if they are not scheduled beforehand it can really mess up the flow of your day.

Client schedule for a wash & blow-dry but when showing up they say “I changed my mind, I want full cut and color.”

When booking via the app, the client will choose the services they want before scheduling their appointment. Furthermore, they will receive an email with those services and with the option to change the services. If they do decide to add something else on or change completely, it will only work if you have the availability.
For example, if a service is booked and you have another appointment directly after, they will not be able to add anything over the preselected time frame. This function will prevent them from “changing their mind” and wreaking havoc on your daily schedule.

4. Friends and Family discounts
As a stylist, you are everybody’s favorite friend, sibling, and grandchild. While you may want to do some people’s hair for free, it can be exhausting and difficult to say no.

Now when you get a call asking to be ‘squeezed in, for a tiny cut’, you can send them the link to your booking page on the app. Not only will they be able to see how much you charge, but it also stops you from being the bad guy and having to say no.

5. Clients asking for services on your day off!
Hairstylists are vampires, they are hardly seen in the daytime outside of the salon and never have time to eat. Early starts and late nights, plus working every weekend and holiday means that time off is not only needed, but it is also sacred. It can be hard to balance customer service with your own life. Responding to calls and messages can be overwhelming at the best of times.

We let you choose your own schedule so you can work as little or as often as you wish and even have a guaranteed lunch break. Your availability is visible to all clients and they can only book appointments to take place during your working hours. (Clients can use the App 24/7 so all you have to do is press ‘Confirm’ when a booking comes through)

6. Hagglers and being ‘too expensive’
“I want to go from black to rainbow ombre, I also need a cut and maybe a few extensions. I have $37 and 35mins. When can I book?”

Thankfully this is not a real request, but it feels like some clients are asking for the impossible. Or you finish a service, work a miracle and give selfie-ready hair for at least the next month, the client is overjoyed… but start asking ”why is it so expensive?” when it is time to pay.

Bypass all of the awkwardness by listing your fully customizable services and price list. When the client books the appointment, they will know exactly how much and there won’t be any surprises!

Ring My Stylist: “these are just a few of the problems we have worked hard to eradicate, so you can focus fully on your craft”.

How To Survive In A Salon Full Of Independent Stylists

Independent Stylist

It is becoming more and more common for salons to move away from the traditional route of employing stylists and now focusing on filling the space with self-employed, with Independent Stylists. There are many pros and cons to this business model but companies like Sola Salon and the Salon Republic are showing just how to do it. Essentially they are no longer focusing on beauty services but in providing prime real estate and the environment needed to create a luxury salon feel. This may be as a large cohesive shop or individual units which all practitioners run however they see fit.

It was only a matter of time before this became widespread as we have seen this used by others such as Uber, where the owners only provide a platform for service to be carried out. It takes the worry out of the business owners hands as they never have to worry about quiet periods, client retention or paying wages. Those fears do not disappear they just get passed on to the stylist.

Running a business is not for the faint-hearted and doing so when your ‘competition’ is literally standing next to you, sounds like complete madness. This is all a matter of perspective.

Working alongside other stylists will actually push you to do better, it keeps you motivated when you know that your client may be looking around so you need to stay on top of your game.

There is an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques. However long you have been in the industry, you are always bound to find someone who does the same thing as you in a completely different way. It may be a simple trick that can reduce service time or generally help you to improve your skillset.

Being an Independent Stylist can get very lonely so you gain a community of people who understand you. Having a support system makes the bad days seem insignificant and the good day shine even brighter.

You get access to products and tools that may have been too expensive to acquire alone. There is power in numbers so working in a big Salon, even as an independent, means that you can try out the latest products as you don’t always have to make the financial investment alone.

If you are lucky enough to find a great salon then do your best to stay as a good working environment is a cornerstone of running a successful business.

Some of the stress that comes with being an independent stylist can easily be managed by using the Ring My Stylist app. Without leaving your chair, you will be visible to hundreds or thousands of potential clients in your area who can not only see you but can book at the touch of a button. It is like having your own personal receptionist. You are fully in control of your column and can even maintain and record client notes. So in the event, you end up moving, which is actually very common ( the beauty industry has the highest turnover only coming second to food and customer service) you don’t need to worry about starting from scratch as you have your client list and full-service history.

How To Choose The Right Stylist

How To Choose The Right Stylist

Choosing a stylist is one of the most important decisions you have to make! Think that sounds a little extra? Well imagine getting a bad haircut then boom you’re a meme and it is viral.

Social media and the selfie make it even more key that we look our best at all times (with minimal effort). Most people want the ‘lived in Hollywood glam look’ that can only be achieved by spending way too much money and time at the salon, so it is only right that you choose someone who can definitely make it happen.

As you are browsing the Ring My Stylist app, it can be hard to choose from all of the amazing talents but we have put a few tips together to help you decide.

1. Know what you want

By the time you book an appointment and sit in the chair, you should already have a clear vision of what you want. Being able to accurately describe the style or having picture references makes sure that you and your stylist are on the same page. Browse apps like Instagram or Pinterest for inspiration. If you are thinking of color and see the perfect shade on a random object don’t be afraid to take a quick snap. Providing visual cues means that you will not end up with any nasty surprises.

2. Think about cost

Some styles require more time and energy and thus have a higher price tag. There are budget, low cost, training, and super luxury salons, basically, whatever you can afford to spend, there will be a stylist in your range. Cost doesn’t determine quality. You can get a great cut and style at a beauty school for a fraction of the cost. As stylists gain more experience and a following, their prices will rise to reflect this.
Always factor in the cost of aftercare, will you have to buy specialty products or have more maintenance services to preserve the quality of your hair.

3. Check their portfolio

Once you have 2 or 3 people in mind it is time to check their portfolio. If they don’t have a website, look for them on social media to find images of their work. A word to the wise – some people will use enhancing apps and filters to make their pictures have the maximum effect. So if possible try to visit the clients’ pages (they are usually tagged) to see the style in normal settings.

4. Read the reviews

We allow clients to leave honest feedback about services on the Ring My Stylist app. This way you can find out just what to expect. You can also do a Yelp and Google search.

5. Book a consultation

A short consultation is always best if you are having a large change or chemical service. It gives you a chance to meet and ask the stylist any questions you may have. Once your nerves are settled go ahead a book.

Retail for stylists who hate selling

Retail for stylists who hate selling

Selling or promoting products is a staple in the beauty industry but ignites fear in the hearts of many. Most people enter the profession for the love of their art and would rather not add anything else to their clients’ final bill. All will attest to the importance of using the correct and high-quality products but don’t want to come across as a used car salesman. Even something as simple as adding a treatment to a service which in our opinion should be compulsory during a color or chemical

Tips to try

1. Place the products you use to create a style in front of the client

There is a reason why candy is placed next to the checkout, it is because retailers know that at the last minute your resolve is very low and you are likely to make an impulse buy. Having great displays will do most of the work for you. Your clients are likely to gravitate towards the products and ask you questions.

If you place 2 or 3 products on your section while you blow-dry, naturally the client will observe and engage with you. Which leads directly to the next point

2. Explain how they can make the style last

Everyone wants to know how to recreate the salon feel at home. What separates a good stylist from a great stylist is going the extra mile. Take the time to demonstrate how to use each product. You will be surprised how many people use the simplest of things wrong ie putting conditioner on their roots. Giving you client simple hacks for each product and style will not keep them out of the salon longer but build a rapport and help them to trust you so they keep coming back and tell all of their friends.

3. Sell your knowledge

If you still feel icky about selling, change your perspective. As mentioned we know the difference a professional product makes which is why we select only the best. Explain this to your client. Of course, some will say that high street brands work just as well but really dig deep into your product training. Get to know the science of how each product works. For example, if you use Olaplex or a bond builder really gets to the heart of how they improve the hair structure and the benefits. When you make people realize how they are actually investing rather than splurging on luxury things get easier.

4. Have one essential

There is always one thing you wish your clients would do to keep their hair healthy or maintain their style. If you present 2 or 3 options always highlight one that MUST be a part of their regime. It is a win-win situation. You sell retail but get your client to take better care of services. At the next appointment always follow up to ask if they see or feel a difference. Don’t let negative feedback hinder you. If it didn’t work for them to find out why and suggest an alternative or check they are using it correctly. Even if it takes 2 or 3 tries once they find the ‘right’ product you know they will keep on making purchases.

5. Do the math

At the end of the day, retail makes a huge difference to your bottom line. As an independent the startup fee to carry a reputable product line can seem out of reach but if you can develop relationships with distributors or pool resources with other stylists the cost is so worth it. If you need help purchasing products or selling retail get in touch with us as we are currently developing a service to help you get started.
