Not everyone is born with naturally flawless skin. Some people have to work to get there. Especially, if some of your daily habits are the reason behind your skin problems.
While everyone has different opinions on what is good for the skin, taking care of it is something personal. No one can know what suits your skin better than you. As long as you follow the basics to build a skincare routine tailored for your skin type, you will be fine.
SKIN TYPE:
It is important to know what type of skin you have to build a routine suited to it. The common skin types and their features include:
1. Dry: dehydrated, rough, flaky and dull complexion
2. Oily: enlarged pores, all over greasy complexion
3. Combination: oily in the T-zone, dry in other areas
4. Sensitive: easily irritated, may itch or string
5. Normal: not sensitive, balanced and smooth
CLEANSING:
The most basic step of your skincare routine is obviously washing your face. Dirt, pollutants, bacteria and other harmful things interact with your skin every day and it is important to get rid of them.
Dry Skin: Make sure the cleanser you use is gentle and alcohol-free to avoid drying out your skin even more. Another tip is to not use hot water as it can remove the natural oils from your skin. To remove the dead flaky skin cells, exfoliate at least once a week. This will make your skin look much smoother.
Oily Skin: A foaming cleanser works best for oily skin. Make sure it is oil-free. The airy foam of these cleansers helps remove dirt and excess sebum from pores leaving your skin less shiny and clean.
Sensitive Skin: Cleanse your face with a gentle product. It is recommended that you do not exfoliate a lot because doing that can irritate sensitive skin. Make sure to use alcohol-free and fragrance-free products.
To maintain radiant skin, it is important that you cleanse your face every morning and before going to sleep at night. Don’t ever sleep with your makeup on as it can clog your pores and cause acne
TONING:
The main purpose of the toner is to restore the natural pH balance of your skin after cleansing. It balances out the barrier of the skin, called the acid mantle, which blocks out bacteria and germs and keeps the skin moisturized.
Apart from that it also acts as an astringent and tightens your pores. Wiping your skin with a toner prevents your pores from getting clogged. It can greatly reduce acne and prevent breakouts.
MOISTURIZE:
A lot of people with oily skin skip this step thinking that they don’t need a moisturizer but it is important to moisturize no matter what your skin type is. Use oil-free moisturizer if your skin is acne-prone or oily so it does not clog your pores. Apply it on a damp face to seal in the moisture.
The three basic steps clean, tone, and moisturize are all you need to follow to build a perfect skincare routine that works for you.
